Passiflora have been found to have beta-carboline harmala alkaloids. Some of which are MAO inhibitors. These chemicals are primarily found in the leaves and roots. The roots of the Passion Flower have been used for generations among native American People as a traditional medicine in a tea that was used as a sedative.
The “Passion” in “passion flower” refers to the passion of Jesus in Christian theology, the various flower parts symbolizing the last days of Jesus, particularly his crucifixion. (Flowers in Christian Symbolism)
